About Me

My Background

David has always had a strong connection and appreciation for nature and wilderness spaces. His paintings have an expression and connection to the
land while exploring elements within the scene.

Smith works in a variety of disciplines, painting in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolour and also printmaking. David has created throughout his life and now spends his time painting and making prints from his home and studio in North Kawartha, Ontario.
Some of his favorite areas to travel to are Peterborough County, the Haliburton Highlands and Algonquin Park. He is drawn to the land painted by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson who had a big influence on his development as a visual artist.

Artist Statement

In a scene something will catch my eye, contrast in light and shadow the movement of colour the gestural lines of objects within nature, the rhythm of elements in the land. These elements and how the light moves over them is where I draw my inspiration.

My work is often accompanied by written observations, ideas or poems formed while creating the work on site or in the studio. My intention is to provide the viewer with the possibility of a previously unknown observation or perspective.
